User reviews for Ashland Springs

Overall Rating: 4 Location [10] • Room [4] • Service [6] • Value [4] When my flea bites continued to itch for 48 hours, I phoned the general manager at the Ashland Springs Hotel to tell him what had happened. Unlike the staff, he was very apologetic about our entire experience. He offered to refund our credit card, an offer we accepted. He said he would make sure the front desk employees do not say they have a refrigerator, and he would personally look into the b... [more]ugs on the bedspread of our room. He also assured me that our experience was very unusual. The rooms are small because of the age of the hotel, but according to him, "people return there year after year because they love it so much." Our experience was not good, but at least the general manager was professional and fair. Additionally, he offered us a tour of the hotel to see other rooms and amenities. [less]

Overall Rating: 2 The lobby is absolutely quaint--like something out of a Humphrey Bogart movie--but the charm ends there. The rooms are VERY small. I have stayed in larger rooms in NYC for the same or lower price. The heat runs all night long, making the rooms unbearably dry, and the noise kept us awake all night. In addition to the vent and street noises, we could hear our neighbor's TV until well past 1 a... [more].m., and then promptly at 7 a.m.
In making the reservation, I had specifically asked if there was a refrigerator in the room. I was assured there was. After we checked in, I called to ask how to get our "refrigerator" cold. I was then told (I think by the same person who had taken my reservation), "Oh, it's not a refrigerator. It's just a cooler. That's as cold as it gets."
Our toilet seemed to flush very slowly, and the next morning, it overflowed. Fortunately, we caught the housekeeper in the hallway, and she had someone fix the toilet right away.
Despite having hi-speed wireless internet in all rooms, the rooms are so dimly lit that it was impossible to work at the desk. We had to request an extra lamp, which someone managed to locate in their "broken" pile. It still worked, but was crushed on top.
The front desk authorized our credit card for an extra $50 per night, without explaining they were doing so. When I complained the next morning upon discovering the charges, the staff and management were unapologetic, saying the charges "were for incidentals" and would "drop off in a couple days." Meanwhile, they continued to charge us separately for incidentals. When I pointed this out, they could not explain why they had done the extra $100 authorization, since they were charging for incidentals separately anyway. Finally, I just gave up--not satisfied, but tired of dealing with them.
The breakfast was ok, and the maid very nice, but on our second night I sat on the comforter in shorts. About 3 minutes later, my skin was burning from bed bug or flea bites! 24 hours later, I am still itchy everywhere. Between the bites, the noise, the toilet, the cramped space, extra charges, and the heat, we checked out without even staying our second night. It was so bad it wasn't even worth staying another night in a prepaid room! [less]

Overall Rating: 4 Location [4] • Room [4] • Service [2] • Value [2] Looks lovely but when you get into the room, the noise from the ducts and vents is ridiculous. When we enquired about the noise...(couldn't sleep for 2 nights) we were informed that the hotel was in a litigation battle with the people who installed the ducts but they would give us 20% off. After further investigation we discovered this had been going on for 18 months and that other people we k... [more]new had experienced the same thing a year ago.
When I asked at the front desk why don't they warn people about the noise I was told that the noise 'moves' around and they can never be sure which room it will affect.!!
I think the management needs to get its act together on this one. [less]
