San Francisco Museum of Modern ArtDescriptionSan Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the more popular areas to visit, for tourists and residents alike. The striking building of the museum was designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. It consists of a sienna brick facade and a central tower of alternating bands of black and white stone. Inside the museum natural light from the tower floods the central atrium and some of the galleries.
The permanent collection consists of more than 26,000 works, including paintings and sculptures by artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, and Andy Warhol. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was one of the first museums to recognize photography as a major art form. The museum's extensive collection includes more than 12,000 works of famous photographers.
