San Jose Museum of ArtDescriptionThe San Jose Museum of Art is located at one of the most historic buildings of San Jose. This Richardson Romanesque-style structure was the city's first building. Designed by Willoughby Edbrooke, this edifice was built in 1892 and served as a post office. An upper portion of the corner tower was lost in the 1906 earthquake. In 1933, the post office operations were moved to a new facility near St. James Park. From 1937 to 1970, the building served as a public library. In 1971, it became the San Jose Museum of Art.
The permanent collection includes about 1,400 twentieth and twenty-first century artworks such as paintings, sculpture, installation, new media, photography, drawings, prints, and artist books. The renovated Historic Wing now includes a cafe, bookstore, and education center.
