Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway

Description

This railway began to transport passengers to the summit of Pikes Peak in 1891, and diesel slowly replaced steam power between 1939 and 1955. The 9-mile route takes 75 minutes to reach the top of 14,110-foot Pikes Peak. For those who enjoy rail travel, the trip is really exciting. The scenery is spectacular and there is a chance to watch for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and yellow-bellied marmots. The panoramic view from the summit is amazing. Be sure to take a jacket or sweater: it can be cold and windy on top, even on warm summer days. The Summit House at the top of Pikes Peak has a restaurant and a gift shop.
