Kalmar Nyckel ShipDescriptionThe historical significance of the original Kalmar Nyckel rivals that of the Mayflower. This grand ship sailed from Sweden to the New World in 1638 leaving its 24 passengers to establish the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, the Colony of New Sweden in present-day Wilmington, Delaware.
The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation has re-created the ship with its fine carvings and richly appointed captain's cabin. Visitors can tour the 139-foot long, three-masted ship, when she is not sailing, or sails aboard Kalmar Nyckel along Delaware's coast.
Operating SeasonsSailing season is from May to October. November through April the ship is at home and open for visiting.
