Old Fort Jackson Historic Site

Description

Fort James Jackson, also known as Old Fort Jackson, was built in 1808 and named in honor of Georgia governor and Revolutionary War soldier James Jackson. It is the oldest standing brick fortification in Georgia. The Fort is also a National Historic Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Visitors can explore the tunnel-like passageways that used to house soldiers, and watch a video presentation on the history of Fort James Jackson. The cannons of the Fort regularly fire salutes at military vessels passing up the Savannah River.
