Old Fort Jackson Historic SiteDescriptionFort James Jackson, also known as Old Fort Jackson, was built in 1808 and named in honor of Georgia governor and Revolutionary War soldier James Jackson. It is the oldest standing brick fortification in Georgia. The Fort is also a National Historic Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Visitors can explore the tunnel-like passageways that used to house soldiers, and watch a video presentation on the history of Fort James Jackson. The cannons of the Fort regularly fire salutes at military vessels passing up the Savannah River.

Getting ThereFrom Bay Street in the historic district of Savannah, travel east toward Tybee Island. At the bottom of the hill you will come to a traffic light. Turn left onto President Street (also known as the Island Expressway). Pass under the Truman Parkway through two traffic lights. Just beyond the second traffic light you will see the large Red, White, and Blue sign "Old Fort Jackson" which will be on your right. Follow the signs to Old Fort Jackson.
