Telfair Museum of ArtDescriptionThe Telfair Museum of Art is the oldest art museum in the South. The museum encompasses two National Historic Landmark buildings, the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Owens-Thomas House, as well as the museum's new building, the Jepson Center for the Arts. The original Telfair Mansion, where the Telfair Academy of Arts is located, was designed and built by English architect William Jay in 1819. It was built for Alexander Telfair, whose father, Edward Telfair, was governor of Georgia.
The permanent collection of the museum includes over 4,500 works of art. The exhibits displays American, French, and Dutch impressionist paintings; German tonalist paintings; a large collection of works by Kahlil Gibran; plaster casts of the Elgin Marbles and some of the Telfair family furnishings, including a Duncan Phyfe sideboard and Savannah-made silver.

The museum is closed on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, St. Patrick's' Day, Easter, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
