Hawaii Volcanoes National ParkDescriptionThe Hawaii Volcanoes National Park covers 377 square miles and provides visitors unique opportunity to see dramatic volcanic landscapes. Established in 1916, the Park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution. It includes diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet.
The must-see attraction of the Volcanoes National Park is Kilauea, the most active volcano of the world. Kilauea has been oozing hot lava continually since 1983. Usually it oozes very slowly from the caldera towards the sea, that makes watching this spectacular natural phenomen safe enough.
Apart from exploring the lava flow itself, Hawaii Volcano National Park offers to travelers more than 150 miles of trail exploring craters, sea-arches, lava tubes, and wildlife. Hiking the park trails to gives an understanding of the natural and cultural history of Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. Day hikes as well as wilderness trips of several days duration are available.
About three miles from the park entrance you'll find Thomas A. Jaggar Museum. It offers earth science displays and features murals depicting Hawaiian culture. An adjacent overlook offers a panoramic view of Kilauea Caldera and Mauna Loa.
