Bishop MuseumDescriptionFounded in 1889 by Charles R. Bishop in honor of his wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi, the museum provides a fascinating look into Hawaii's colorful past. It houses more than 24.7 million items - objects of the Hawaiian culture given to the Museum by members of the ali‘i and collected over the years and artifacts of the European, American, and Asian immigrant cultures. The museums exhibits showcase preindustrial Polynesian art, lustrous feather capes of kings, seashells, koa-wood bowls, nose flutes, the skeleton of a giant sperm whale, and an authentic, well-preserved grass house inside a two-story 19th-century Victorian style gallery. Hula performances and Hawaiian crafts presentations take place daily.
