Shangri LaDescriptionShangri La was built in 1937 as a seasonal home in Honolulu for Doris Duke. Finding herself captivated by oriental culture and enamored with Hawaii, Doris Duke designed her new home in collaboration with architect Marion Sims Wyeth to evoke the character of each. Shangri La borrows architectural elements from the Islamic world, and combines them with a beautiful Hawaiian landscape.
Shangri La houses Doris Duke’s collection of Islamic art. It includes religious works of art and ones made for everyday life. Objects from the collection date as early as 1500 B.C. to as late as the 20th century, including Duke’s commissions from modern Muslim artisans. Particular types of Islamic art can be seen in the interior and exterior spaces of Shangri La – ceramics, ornate wood interiors, intricate mosaic tile panels.
Public ToursShangri La is open to the public for guided, small group tours. Because of high demand, tickets may need to be reserved several months in advance.
Tours begin at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and last approximately 2 1/2 hours, with 1 1/2 hours on site at Shangri La.
