Idaho Botanical GardenOne chinese proverb teaches: "A real garden, where one can enter and forget the whole world, cannot be made in a week or a month or a year. It must be planned for, and waited for, and loved into being".
Our Garden is a living museum, dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of gardening, horticulture and conservation, through plant collections and education programs within an aesthetic landscape.
The Garden occupies 50 acres that originally served as the farm and nursery for the Idaho State Penitentiary. The Old Penitentiary shut its doors in 1973 and for 12 years the land lay dormant. Dr. Davidson and the first board of directors negotiated a lease in 1984 and transformed the area from rock, weeds, and rubble into beautifully cultivated gardens. Today the Idaho Botanical Garden has blossomed into 13 specialty gardens, each with a unique focus on Herb, Rose, Alpine, Contemporary English, Outlaw Field, Butterfly & Hummingbird, Iris, Meditation, Water, Cactus, Peony, Children, and Idaho Native Plants and the Don Dick Outdoor Classroom.
