Birds of Prey ExpeditionsThe magnificent Snake River Canyon in Southwest Idaho was created 15,000 years ago by the great Bonneville flood. The deluge left sheer basalt walls and deposits of boulders of all sizes worn smooth by the tumbling waters. Later, early Native Americans inhabited the canyon, taking advantage of its moderate climate and abundant fish and game. They also used many of the numerous boulders as a canvas for their art work.
The miners and settlers followed. Some were after the riches left in the gravel deposits along the river bank; others were looking for a place to raise crops and a family.
Birds of Prey Expeditions has a special interest in the history of the Snake River Canyon. We offer tours on this unique section of the river that allows you to view and experience the petroglyphs created by the early Native Americans, as well as the later mining and settlement activity. Many of these sites are accessible only by boat or arduous hike.
Along the way, our guides will not only acquaint you with the history of the canyon, but also the geology and wildlife found in this high desert eco-system. Special attention is given to raptors found nesting on and soaring above the canyon walls. This is an experience that truly is educational and fun!
Trips begin and end at Celebration Park, the only archaeological park in Idaho. It’s a great place for a picnic, and after the trip there are many displays and activities that you can view and take part in. You might want to try an atlatl, as used by the Paleo-Indians to hunt the Mega fauna of the Pleistocene Ice Age. Just be careful where you point that thing!
