John G. Shedd Aquarium

Description

The marble octagon building of the Shedd Aquarium is filled with thousands of denizens of river, lake, and sea. It is the world's largest indoor aquarium, housing more than 8,000 aquatic animals. The first thing you'll see as you enter is the "Caribbean Coral Reef." The 90,000-gallon circular tank is home to nurse sharks, barracudas, stingrays, and a hawksbill sea turtle. Enhanced sound system and a roving camera give visitors close-ups of the animals inside.

"Amazon Rising" recreates environments of the Amazon River with an up-close look at many animals including piranhas, snakes, and stingrays. Another popular attraction is the spectacular Oceanarium, with pools that seem to blend into Lake Michigan, which is visible through the glass wall.

The newest signature exhibit of the aquarium is "Wild Reef - Sharks at Shedd,” a series of 26 connected habitats that house a Philippine coral reef patrolled by sharks and other predators. It is one of the largest and most diverse shark exhibits in North America.
