New England AquariumDescriptionSince opening in 1969, New England Aquarium has become one of Boston's biggest tourist attractions. It is home to more than 15,000 fish and aquatic mammals. The complex has a cafe, a gift shop, IMAX Theatre and changing exhibits. The most famous exhibit is the four-story, 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank, which contains a replica of a Caribbean coral reef. Sharks, sea turtles, moray eels and tropical fish cruise by crowds of visitors behind the glass. Other exhibits present freshwater and tropical specimens, a wide variety of jellyfish, denizens of the Amazon, and the ecology of Boston Harbor.
Discovery, the floating marine mammal pavilion, houses performing sea lions. At the Edge of the Sea exhibit, visitors have the unique possibility to touch the sea stars, sea urchins, and horseshoe crabs in the tide pool. The Simons IMAX Theatre, which has its own building, hours, and admission fees, shows 3-D films with digital sound that concentrate on the natural world.
