Long Island Museum

Description

The Margaret Melville Blackwell History Museum presents changing exhibitions on American historical and social themes. It includes a gallery of fifteen miniature rooms and one of the top three hand-carved antique duck decoy collections in the United States.

The Dorothy and Ward Melville Carriage House includes nine galleries housing The Museums' collection of over 250 horse-drawn vehicles widely recognized as the finest in the United States. Over 100 carriages are always on display, along with other rare artifacts from the carriage era.

The Museums Historic Buildings and Grounds are perfect for educational programs and events year round.

Getting There

By Car: Take the Long Island Expressway (Route 495) to Exit 62. Proceed north on County Road 97 (Nicolls Road) to its end. Turn left onto Route 25A for 1-1 1/2 miles, to the intersection of 25A and Main Street in Stony Brook. Turn Left.
The Museums main entrance is on the right. Driving time from New York City approximately one to one and one half hours.

Ferry Services: From New England between Bridgeport, CT, Port Jefferson, LI, four miles east of The Museums, and between New London, CT, and Orient Point on the east end of Long Island. Both ferries operate year round.
Car and walk-on reservations are suggested for summer and holiday travel.

By Train:
Stony Brook Station is located along the Long Island Rail Road, Port Jefferson line. From Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, travel time is approximately one and one half hours.
Taxi service is available at Stony Brook Station, located on Route 25A one mile east of The Museums.

Entrance Fee

Adults: $7.00
Seniors 62+: $6.00
Students 6-17 years and College students (with ID): $3.00
Children under 6 years and museum members: FREE.

Operating Hours

The Long Island Museum is open year-round.
Museum Hours :
Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon - 5 p.m.

The Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and the following holidays:
Thanksgiving Day, Dec. 24 and 25, Jan. 1.
