Central ParkDescriptionCentral Park is a green oasis, located in the very center of Manhattan Island amidst the surrounding array of high-rise buildings. Millions of New Yorkers come to Central Park every day. The park was created in 1857 by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux. It became so naturally part of the Manhattan environment that some people do not realize that the park is entirely man-made.
Central Park is a favorite place of walkers, rollerbladers, bikers and joggers. There are several fine restaurants or at hundreds of inexpensive food carts. Attractions of the park include a charming zoo, restored carousel and Belvedere Castle. Lovers meet at Bethseda Fountain on Bethseda Terrace. In the summer, visitors enjoy "Shakespeare in the Park" by the New York Public Theater. The New York Philharmonic Symphony and the Metropolitan Opera offer free performances in the park.
