World's Largest Sandhill Crane

Description

Greeting visitors of the city of Steele, North Dakota, the World's Largest Sandhill Crane, named "Sandy", stands on the Interstate 94 side of the Lone Steer Motel/Cafe. Made in 1999 by Arena, North Dakota resident James Miller, the World's Largest Sandhill Crane is approximately 4.5 tons and up to 40 feet high. Built of rolled sheet metal welded onto steel inside frame, the crane was really built in three different sections - the body in one section, the neck and head in another, and pipes were adjusted to make the legs. Currently, many native grasses, flowers, and trees settle the area surrounding the crane. In 2004, the James Miller Memorial Flower Garden was built along with three birding informational kiosks. Future works for the site will add a butterfly garden and a wetland area.

Why did the residents of Steele, North Dakota construct a gigantic Sandhill Crane? It's just to call attention to the fact that Kidder County is one of the best birding locations in North America. The Coteau Rangeland of North Dakota, usually known as the Prairie Pothole Region, is a place of glacial potholes located in the direct path of the migration flyway - making this area a beloved spot for migrating nesting birds including the Sandhill Crane.
