Coos County Historical Society The Coos County Historical Society was founded in November of 1891 and is one of the oldest continuously operating local historical societies in the state of Oregon. The Society operated a museum for ten years in Coquille prior to moving to our current North Bend location in 1958. Our museum is really interesting for everybody!
Inside the museum you will be greeted by our friendly staff and volunteers. Thimbles, seeds, and shells, adorn a Native-American dance apron. The Society maintains a large collection of regional Native-American basketry. Always living near the water, Indians made these cooking baskets with a tight weave that held water. Rocks were heated in the fire and dropped into the basket to heat the contents for cooking.
The museum features many finely decorated examples of Native-American baskets woven from a variety of indigenous materials Some baskets were used for storage. Others were worn as hats and some were used as cradles.
Elegant fashions from the early 1900s illustrate clothing that may have been worn by local residents bound for the opera or symphony in San Francisco ... a 24-hour trip by steamer from Coos Bay. From the 1850's until the Great War, Coos County had stronger cultural and economic ties to San Francisco, CA than Portland, OR.
You will learn a lot of interesting things if you find the time to visit the museum!
