Fort Sumter National MonumentDescriptionFort Sumter is the place where the first shot of the Civil War was fired on April 12, 1861. After a 34-hour bombardment, Union forces surrendered and Confederate forces occupied Fort Sumter, which became a symbol of Southern resistance. Despite almost continual bombardment, Confederate troops held the fort for nearly four years. Today, the Fort Sumter National Monument complex includes the restored Fort Sumter and the Fort Sumter Liberty Square Visitor Center, containing exhibits on the Civil War.
