Magnolia Plantation & GardensDescriptionMagnolia Plantation is historic house with gardens located on the Ashley River in Charleston. It is one of the oldest plantations in the south. Ten generations of the Drayton family have lived here continuously since the 1670s. Originally a rice plantation, Magnolia became known for its beautiful gardens after the Reverend John Grimke Drayton inherited the property in the 1840s and created here gardens in an English style.
Today, Magnolia Plantation is a popular tourist attraction. The house is filled with museum-quality Early American furniture, appraised to exceed $500,000 in value. It also hosts an art gallery. A slavery history tour and a marsh boat tour are offered to visitors. But the most attractive part of Magnolia Plantation is, of course, its gardens. They reach their peak bloom in March and April but are colorful year-round.
