Middleton PlaceDescriptionMiddleton Place is a 18th-century plantation with the 60-acre beatifully landscaped garden. Begun in 1741 by Henry Middleton, President of the First Continental Congress, the gardens reflect the elegant symmetry of European gardens of that period. The plantation house itself was built in 1755. A large part of the house was destroyed during the Civil War, but the south wing was restored in the 1870s. Today it houses impressive collections of silver, furniture, paintings, and historic documents.
Beautiful landscaped terraces, ornamental ponds, shadowy allees, and garden rooms are laid out with precise symmetry and balance. The gardens are ablaze with camellia, magnolia, azalea, and rose blossoms. Middleton Place the most unique and grand garden of its time. A plantation lunch is served at the Middleton Place restaurant. The garden shop offers rare seedlings of plants, and the gift shop - local arts, crafts, and souvenirs.
