The ParthenonDescriptionThe Parthenon is the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville's premier urban park. It was constructed to commemorate Tennessee's 1897 centennial. Nashville's Parthenon is the only full-size replica of the Greek Parthenon in the world. The building duplicates the floor plan of the original Parthenon.
Inside there is the 42-foot-tall statue of Athena Parthenos, the goddess of wisdom, prudent warfare, and the arts. The statue is also a full-scale replica of the Athenian original. In addition to the impressive statue, there are original plaster castings of the famous Elgin marbles - bas-reliefs that once decorated the pediment of the Parthenon.
The Parthenon also serves as the city of Nashville's art museum. In the basement galleries there is an excellent collection of 19th- and 20th-century American art.
