Austin ZooDescription The zoo is a happy place with monkeys on both sides of the fences playing and searching for new things. There are ponies and goats who long to receive an endearment and food. In the corner of the zoo three black bears walk over a limestone outcropping. The seventeen big cats are all around the grounds. They look like the stars of the show.
Most of these animals have lived terrible lives up until their retreat to the Austin Zoo. Of the 300 animals at the shelter, 90 percent were saved from bad situations. Some of the monkeys were used as research subjects before arrival to the zoo. Other animals were abused or abandoned when their owners could no longer keep them.
The Austin Zoo may look like a family park, but under that exterior is a humanitarian institution saving abused and neglected animals. Opened in 1994, the zoo isn't combined with the city of Austin. Rather, it is a nonprofit beneficent organization and individual mission of Cindy and Jim Carroccio, the owners of the zoo.
