Galveston Island Railroad Museum and Terminal

Description

The Museum possesses 3 steam engines and 3 diesel engines on site. The steam engines are all on static showing. The diesel engines are active. The greater efficiency of diesel engines paralleled to steam engines, and the fewer moving parts to be serviced, repaired, or replaced, resulted in steam engines being left by most major railroads by the late 1950's. Some short line railroads continued to use steam into the 1960's.

People of all ages, and especially Boy Scouts may be excited about facilities at the Galveston Island Railroad Museum to study for a Railroading Merit Badge. The Museum has the largest collection of railroad artifacts in the southwestern United States. In the yard are diesel and steam engines, plenty of freight and passenger cars, cabooses and maintenance of way cars. There are also exhibit cars full of railroading artifacts. In the main building, which once was home for the offices of the Santa Fe Railroad and the Union Passenger Depot, is a working ho-scale model railroad based around the Port of Galveston. In the previous railway express office building is the newest 700 square foot ho-scale model railroad.
