Menil CollectionDescriptionThe Menil Collection is an unparalleled museum situated in the Montrose-area Museum District, featuring the collection of John and Dominique de Menil. The museum is the center building of a neighborhood including satellite gallery spaces and related cultural establishments set in a park like setting.
The Menil Collection, which is managed by the Menil Foundation, Inc., opened to the public in June 1987 as the initial repository of John and Dominique de Menil’s private collection. One of the most essential of the twentieth century, the collection includes nearly 15,000 works dating from the Paleolithic era to the present day. Although historically huge, it uniquely withstands the habitual museum model of the encyclopedia. Instead, within the four areas that considerably define the collection—Antiquity, Byzantine and Medieval, Tribal, and Twentieth-Century Art (with a concentration in Surrealism)—one discovers a selective approach to purchase that provides depth with regard to special areas and artists.
