Dead Horse Point State ParkDescriptionDead Horse Point State Park is located adjacent to Canyonlands National Park. The park is so named because of its use as a natural corral. The only escape was through a narrow, 30-yard neck of land, and it was easy for rustlers to simply fence off this narrow neck, and keep their horses from running away. Unfortunately the lack of food and water, and limited space often killed the horses.
The overlook at Dead Horse Point is 6,000 feet above sea level. From this point, the canyon erosion may be viewed on a grand scale. Two thousand feet below, the Colorado River winds its way from the continental divide in Colorado to the Gulf of California.
