Seneca CavernsDescriptionUnusual underground rooms filled with the brilliance of nature's artistry, create an air of enchantment. Visitors may set free their fantasy as they look upon the formations, such as stalagmites and stalactites, which have been made by drops of water trickling through the roof of the caverns for thousands of years. The caverns hold wealth of snow-white and creamy streaks of flowstone, where water flowing in a very thin sheet over rocks has layered mineral matter. Streaks of flowstone lace themselves with swarthy color as they drape the walls and fall over precipitous edges. In some rooms, one will discover flecks of calcite crystal woven into the flowstone causing reflected light to glitter and sparkle.
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the caverns were used as a refuge for the Seneca Indians. The Seneca tribe used the caverns for ceremonial use and refuge from cold winter storms and enemy tribes.
