The Organ CaveDescriptionOrgan Cave is one of the longest caves in the United States, with over 45 miles of mapped passages and 200 yet to be explored. It was first explored by colonial pioneers in 1704. Today, Organ Cave offers tourists a chance to see a well preserved, natural cave that has been left as unchanged as possible. The hour and a half walking tours of cave are held all year round.
Experienced guides will lead tour and show the fundamentals of cave ecology, and you will have a chance to see many fantastic sights, including fossils, stalactites and stalagmites, and a well preserved Civil War refinery used by Confederate soldiers to make saltpetre, a valuable mineral used to produce gunpowder, and can still be seen glittering on cavern walls.
The temperature of the cave stays around 48 degrees summer and winter, though the entrance falls to around 35 during the winter month. You should bring a light jacket for summer tours and a heavier one for winter tours. The cool, clean cave air is very refreshing in summer. The camera is allowed.
